What is it all about?
The travelling-community dodo.com is primarily about recommending holiday destinations and to share experiences with other people. This happens with the posts of the respective destination or videos/photos of the last vacation.
What possibilities do I have?
You get – characteristically for those communities – an own profile which can be personalized with things like having children, holiday destinations which you ever wanted to see, mottos or faculties of speech. In addition you are able to add friends, write diary entries of your holiday or upload pictures of the last holiday. So it is possible to get in touch with like-minded people and to read the memories of a holiday or to be inspired to see the same places like the people of the diaries you read. There is also the chance to change the language from English to German, which is quite a good idea to connect the people of different cultures and countries. The possibility to chart frequented places and places to go into a map is very interesting for all the people who can see this map.
How many interesting people are there?
Over 65000 visitors from 160 countries have already visited the site, which is – in consideration of the fact that this page has beta-status – quite a respectable number. The site is in working progress, so dodo.com has good chances to get even more visitors from all over the world.
How is the quality of the field reports?
First of all, most of the reports are not written in professional way. But in my opinion this is the biggest plus factor this page has got. You get no extracts from catalogues which are focused on selling journeys, but honest critique for everyone. In fact there are not that much elaborated posts, but the existing posts are enough to get a good impression. And of course – as I said before – this page is a beta one, so I am in a good hope for many more articles.
How is the page working?
The registration is for free and easy to handle. Within a few minutes you get your activation link. Before you have to choose your name, e-mail-address, home country and password.
With a clearly arranged menu even beginners are able to find the results they want to have.
The search for photos, videos and reviews is well done; with a few clicks it is possible to get these things for a country of the user’s choice. But it would be better if it would be possible to award own tags, that could be found easily with the help of a search engine.
The ‘compliments’ are kind of curious, things like “Hallo” (should be ‘Hello’), “Write more” or “Great profile” are not the best compliments generally, the first two are – in my opinion – no compliments at all. In this case it would be nice if you either have more compliments to choose or be allowed typing own compliments.
And it would seem the thing to have a box in your profile for the own homepage or different messengers to give the users more possibilities to talk with each other.
What is the name about?
The name refers to the extinct bird “Dodo”. But the name is not only about the mysteries and stories of this bird; it is also about saving endangered species.
What is this thing with the lottery?
The delicacy about dodo.com is the chance for all registered members to win a round-the-world trip with a value of 15.000$. To increase the chances you collect lots, for example by writing new diary entries, uploading photos or to canvass new users. The lottery ends on the 31.12.2008. All interested people should collect many lots as possible to this date.
What do I have to say in conclusion?
For a beta-version the dodo-page is not bad! Especially fans of travelling and those who do not want to be dependent of travelling catalogues should feel comfortable on this page. If there will be some things fixed then this website could be interesting for even more people. But the implantation yet is good either.
