The Mousekewitz’ flee from their home Russia to America, because “There are no cats in America” – or so they say. On the marine-transit son Feivel falls overboard; he is washed up on America’s shore in a bottle. His family believes he’s lost and also Feivel doesn’t really aspire finding them. In search of his parents and his sister Tanya he meets some friends, but also recognizes quickly that life in America perhaps looks bright, but in reality, it isn’t.
Before sorting “An American Tail” out, I wanted to watch it for one last time. To my surprise it was not that infantile as I thought, but had much correspondence to reality or rather historical background. “There are no cats in America – and the cheese hangs down the trees”. Transfused on mice it might be that what many immigrants expected America to offer: No injustice, a high standard of living and streets paved with gold.
The film is animated quite well, with backgrounds appearing lifelike. Good characters, above all the sweet Feivel, form it. In addition, you can listen to some quite nice songs (“There are no cats in America” is a very catchy song).
“An American Tail” is probably adequate for little children and families primarily, but nevertheless also worth seeing for older persons.
