After having blown up his aunt and having left his uncle’s house, Harry reckons that he will be banished from Hogwarts. But he’s very surprised seeing that the Minister for Magic himself attends to this affair and lets him get off lightly. Arthur Weasley, the father of Harry’s best friend Ron, finally discloses the secret: Sirius Black, a notorious criminal who escaped from the wizard prison Azkaban, chases after Harry and is out to kill him.

“Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, the third part of the Potter-serial, perhaps doesn’t offer that much humour, because the story now turns a bit more cheerless and more demanding, but thus, more suspense is exhibited and J.K. Rowling’s ideas are presented persuasively once more. The new director, Alfonso Cuarón, directly made some modifications, amongst other things he changed the film location. He also sets not so much value on the exact accordance with Rowling’s novel but on the cinematic construction. So, for example, Harry and Hermione encroach upon the past during their little time travel a few times. In the book this happens only one time, but thus, Cuarón makes it easier for the viewer who hasn’t read the third book to catch on.

Camera-technical and musical seen, this part is not inferior to the others; the animation of the animals is even better as in the first both parts – above all the animation of the hippogriff Buckbeak was a problem, but succeeded well.

The main actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint – as well in the reality as in the film – grow up and perform more mature than before. The new persons (Sirius Black and the professors Trelawney and Lupin) are well staffed with Gary Oldman, Emma Thompson and David Thewlis.

This movie is very well worth seeing and should also be accessible for non-Potter-fans.
