It couldn’t be better for Reuben Feffer: He works for an insurance company and takes to it like a duck to water – and after the wedding with the pretty Lisa Kramer he can look forward to his honeymoon. But the disillusion follows directly: Reuben catches Lisa red-handed with the French diving instructor Claude. There is no time to be frustrated, because soon he runs into his old schoolfellow Polly. They are sympathetic to each other, but conflicts are inescapable between Reuben, who only thinks in numbers, and the “alternation-addicted” Polly.
Hollywood produces masses of films like „Along came Polly“: Guy meets old school buddy and falls in love with her. This film comes up with some funny scenes, but altogether the special is missing.
The characters are decidedly the best of this movie. Claude, charming instructor and nudist; Javier, the gay dancing master; Leland van Lew, a manic businessman, whose motto is “No risk, no fun”; Sandy, a friend of Reuben, who considers himself to be the greatest actor of all ages; and then of course Reuben (played by Ben Stiller), who always knows everything about every risk, and Polly (Jennifer Aniston), who is not interested in this at all.
So: A very good script, but the actors play (except Philip Seymour Hoffman as Sandy) just of sorts. You can watch this film perhaps one time, but that’s enough.
